Course Content

Small Animals & General Health
In this session, we will be exploring small animal general health! Although vets are prepared to deal with sick and critical unwell animals, vets also have a responsibility to give good general health advice to keep healthy animals healthy! After all, prevention is better than cure. Throughout the day, we will explore all aspects of small animal general health from vaccinations, nutrition, dentistry, clinical examinations and much ore. You will be able to watch our live vet dealing with real patients and their owners in a consultation room, and there will be teaching sessions with the Chief Mentors to discuss what you have seen and learnt. General health is the core to good animal health and welfare, so this is set to be an informative and inspiration day as part of Vet Mentor's Work Experience Programme.

Lambing
Join us for this Vet WEX session where we will take you virtual lambing! Lambing is often a student's favourite placement but is historically difficult to access, especially for students living in urban areas. This has been exacerbated by COVID restrictions. So Vet Mentor is bringing lambing and sheep farming to you! In this event, you will see farmers and vets deal with sheep and their lambs. This will be enhanced with teaching sessions with our vets. We can't wait for you to join us!

Equine Medicine
Vet WEX is back with an amazing equine instalment! You will get to see a real equine vet dealing with real horses and their owners through a series of clinical scenarios. Vet Mentor Vice President, Dr Layla MRCVS, is one of the teaching leads for the day and she can't to see you at the virtual stables!

Mixed Clinical Practice
You will see our vet head to Freightliners City Farm to deal with some unwell animals. Mixed practice remains a popular career pathway for graduate vets largely because it offers so much variety. It simply means that as a mixed practice vet, you deal with lots of different species on a day-to-day basis. Our vet will work through numerous cases with a huge variety of species including rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep, goats and chickens! You’ll see the vet using problem-solving and communication skills to diagnose and treat the animals in their care. Most vet schools require you to shadow vets prior to applying to vet school. This gives you a realistic and informed insight into what it’s like to work as a vet.

Veterinary Ethics and Animal Welfare
We are excited to welcome Dr. Mandisa Greene MRCVS and Dr. Kate Richards MRCVS, the Senior Vice President and President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to this session. This session focuses on: professional responsibilities in the veterinary profession, animal welfare and veterinary ethics. These three areas form a crucial part of a career as a vet and we hope that you find it interesting to see how a vet deals with some ethical dilemmas. As always, you will see our vet Dr. Shannon interacting with real patients and their owners. The RCVS aims to enhance society through improved animal health and welfare. We set, uphold and advance the educational, ethical and clinical standards of vets and vet nurses. They will join Vet Mentor to teach you about these interesting topics and discuss the ethics of each simulation that takes place.
